Individual Exchange

Budapest Metropolitan University – Individual Exchange Program

The Individual Exchange Program at Budapest Metropolitan University (METU) offers our students the opportunity to participate in one- or two-semester study mobility at METU’s bilateral partner universities. Students may apply twice during an academic year: once for the fall semester and once for the spring semester. The list of available universities is updated for each application period.

Financial Conditions

Students continue to pay their regular tuition fees at METU, while they are exempt from tuition fees at the host university. However, all other costs related to mobility – such as accommodation, travel, insurance, living expenses, and study materials – must be covered by the student. METU does not provide financial support within the framework of the Individual Exchange program. Therefore, students bear full responsibility for all expenses during the mobility period.

Application Requirements

You must be enrolled at METU in full-time or part-time studies (BA, MA, Higher Education Vocational Training, or Postgraduate Specialist Training).

You must have active student status at the time of application and throughout the entire individual mobility period.

The mobility must be connected to your current studies and contribute to your professional development. Apply only to institutions where METU has a bilateral agreement in your field of study (see partner list on CooSpace).

Planned mobility must last a minimum of 2 months (one semester/trimester) and a maximum of 12 months per study cycle.

At least one completed semester at application, and at least two completed semesters before departure are required. (For MA students, no completed semester is required.)

GPA requirement: minimum 3.0 average in the two most recent active semesters before applying. (With only one completed semester, the GPA of that semester applies; for MA students, the BA diploma GPA is considered).

If you will be a final-year student, especially in arts, approval from your program director and thesis supervisor is required (must be uploaded in the application form).

You must meet the language proficiency requirements of the host university (generally minimum B2).

Where You Can Apply:

The list of partner universities is available on CooSpace (coming soon).

Required Documents

Proof of language proficiency (state-recognized language exam certificate, METU Language Institute certificate, or advanced-level high school diploma).

Transcript of records (downloaded from Neptun, including a screenshot of GPA with visible Neptun code) or BA diploma.

Motivation letter in English (300–500 words): Explain what you want to study, at which universities, why you chose them, and what you expect from the mobility. Focus on academic aspects: how the international experience contributes to your studies at METU.

Portfolio (for art students): Upload a portfolio of your works. If you will be a final-year art student during mobility, also upload approvals from your program director and thesis supervisor. Note: If you spend your last semester abroad, graduation in that semester may not be guaranteed!

Declaration Form for Individual Exchange: Signed statement confirming that you fully understand and accept that METU does not provide financial support for Individual Exchange mobilities. You agree to cover all related costs (including but not limited to travel, accommodation, visa, insurance, living expenses, and study materials).

Optional: Proof of scientific achievements or community involvement (e.g., TDK, OTDK, ESN, international competitions, exhibitions, volunteering at METU, other professional recognitions).

For non-Hungarian citizens: valid residence permit/registration certificate or refugee status documentation.
