The Best of METU diploma 2021 series introduces the best diploma projects of our students and the amazing creators behind these. These mini-interviews offer a glimpse into the thoughts, feelings and plans of our fresh graduates of Budapest Metropolitan University.
In this interview, meet Graciela Hernandez, graduate of our Animation BA program.
What made you want to educate yourself in this field, why did you choose this major?
I chose animation because I've always liked drawing and animated films, and I felt it made the most sense to me.
What were your favorite projects during your studies and why?
I really enjoyed making animated shorts and being able to design and bring new characters to life.
What was your diploma project? Why did you choose this topic?
My diploma project was ‘Alone at sea’, a story about a little mermaid. I chose it because I really like fairy tales. I wanted to make something sweet and fairly simple, but also powerful in a way. It really matches my style as well.
How did METU support your professional development during your studies?
I was able to make drawings for METU's social media platforms during my studies, and I was introduced to people who helped me improve my skills and eventually work for a bigger project outside the university.
What does “Inspired by creativity” mean to you at METU?
"Inspired by creativity" means that one can find inspiration everywhere, even in small details, but what really inspires me at METU is the astounding amount of people working towards their goals. These are some of the most ambitious and creative people I have ever met and seeing them working hard and moving forward is truly inspiring.
What would you say to someone who is interested in METU, why should they choose this university?
I would tell them to give it a shot and be willing to go through hardships, but also be prepared to meet some amazing people who will become really good friends and true inspirations.

What are your plans for the future?
At the moment, my plans are to stay in METU and pursue a master's degree in my field, while also finding work, and living in Budapest.
