You can find out about the conditions for being an active student HERE. If you have any further questions, please contact the SIC.
  • Mobility should be connected to your current studies and help your professional development - only apply to an institution where, based on the downloadable partner list, METU has a contract in your field of study. Visit our website for the partner list!

Additional Funding Opportunities

Please click HERE

  • Support of language studies:
    • The European Committee supports students with an online language preparation system (OLS) in English, German, French, Italian, Dutch and Spanish languages.
    • Language courses offered by the host University before the study period are optional. However, this period can also be funded by the Erasmus+ program.

Important things to look out for when applying

How to select the host institution?

  • In the framework of this Erasmus+ program, you can only apply to European partner institutions in order to be awarded a scholarship. In case you would like to apply to a non-European partner, please find more information on THIS site.
  • You can apply for 1 semester – autumn or spring. In case of available funding, you might be able to extend your stay from autumn to spring, but due to the project you can not extend from spring to autumn.
  • Erasmus courses: at the host institution you usually do not join your ‘own’ study year, but you will be able to choose from a big list of ‘Erasmus courses’ available for exchange students. These do not have to exactly match your METU curriculum.

  • Consider your study advancement! You can consult with the Student Information Center to plan your study advancement and to be aware of the necessary deadlines to complete your studies on time.
  • Consult your head of department or head of institute about what would be most useful for you. It is compulsory to consult your Head of Department/Head of Institute about the courses abroad you wish to include in your Learning Agreement (OLA).
  • Over-subscription in the best-sounding (Mediterranean) cities is very common. Don't apply just to these universities to make sure you don't miss out! We have great partner universities in smaller cities and many opportunities beyond Western Europe!
  • The scholarship is not aimed to and can’t cover all of the expenses at the host country – consider the prices in the host country, check the extra finding opportunities and consider how much extra amount you can afford while abroad. Don’t forget you need to pay the tuition fee at METU. During your stay, you can work in accordance with local rules.
  • Housing is often difficult in big cities or small towns with many universities - it may be worth exploring the dormitory options and housing situation in the cities you are applying to. Start researching accommodation options as soon as possible!
  • Take the required language knowledge serious – In southern European universities, you may need to know the local language. Find out from Erasmus alumni or ask the International Office about their experiences in this area.
  • You can prove your language knowledge when applying for the Erasmus at METU with the certificate from the Institute of Foreign Languages – but the partner might ask for official language exam when you apply to them in a later stage. Always check the requirement on the partner’s site!

Study advancement

  • Absolutory: you can only go on Erasmus in case you are an active student in that semester, therefore you can’t pass all your subjects earlier. SIC can help you regarding your curriculum and the advancement.
  • In the case of mobility during the semester of the diploma, the mobility must be completed, and the courses taken abroad must be presented by the graduation deadline otherwise you won’t be able to take the final exam and conclude your studies.
Taking a semester abroad is not recommended based on the experience due to the strict deadlines at METU and the different academic calendars and processes at the partner institutions. Getting the necessary documents or the recognition of courses can delay the process even due to administrative factors beyond your control. You can check the academic calendar of the partner institutions on their website or by emailing them.
  • Art student in their degree semester: due to the practical requirements of their program it is not recommended nor supported to be abroad during the diploma semester if you want to take the final exam and obtain a diploma.
  • Courses at the host institution: you need to pass a minimum of 20 ECTS at the host institution and have a minimum of 10 credits recognised at METU as a compulsory or optional subject.  If this leads to a credit overdraft at METU, you do not have to pay for it.
  • Fee-paying students: during the mobility you need to pay the tuition fee at METU because you need to keep your active student status. However, this situation does entitle you to claim additional aid. You can find information on this under "additional support possibilities".
  • You will be a full-time student at the host university even if you are not a full-time student at home.
